Broken cuticles/ hangnail occurs when the skin is desiccated and lacks the necessary levels of fats and moisture. By frequently washing your hands the water wipes out moisture in the skin. To prevent dryness it is recommended to use an oil-based soap as regular soap dehydrates the essential sebum from the skin. Broken cuticles/ hangnail can be irritating and painful when large areas of cracks occur.
Broken cuticles/ hangnail arises when the upper keratinized layer of the skin is dried out, this mainly occurs due to lacking sebum. When hands are exposed to cold or to intense water stress moisture is reduced in the skin. This leads to cracks. The healing conditions for broken cuticles/ hangnail deteriorates when you bite, tear or poke at them. By irritating the cuticle the risk for infection increases. Use an antibacterial cream that moisturizes the cuticles and prevents infection. Remember to keep your hands protected in cold and moisturize them regularly.
